ABSTRACT An alternative to the agrochemicals is the use of essential oils that can act in plant defense against phytopathogens. The objective of work was to evaluate the antifungal activity, the early blight control, and the enzymatic defense in tomato treated with citronella essential oil. Mycelial disks of the pathogen were added in Petri dishes, with treatments 0, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500 μL L-1 of essential oil and a control treatment with fungicide, thus evaluated mycelial growth and sporulation. The treatments were applied in the second pair of leaves of plants (treated) and after 72 hours the pathogen was inoculated on the second pair (treated) and also on the third pair leaves (untreated). The severity was expressed through the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). The enzymatic activity of peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase were evaluated. The essential oil reduced the mycelial growth and sporulation of the pathogen. The AUDPC was reduced up to 38.14% in the treated leaves and 51.32% in the untreated, and increases in the activities of enzymes were found. The essential oil of citronella could be an alternative in the control of tomato early blight by antimicrobial activity and/or resistance induction local and systemically.

RESUMO Fungos basidiomicetos decompositores de madeira produzem substâncias com atividade biológica promissora para o controle alternativo de doenças de plantas. A produção dessas substâncias é influenciada pela condição climática e substrato utilizado para cultivo do fungo. Dessa forma, objetivou-se desenvolver um substrato com serragem de Eucalyptus sp. para verificar a influência na produção de biomassa e cinabarina por Pycnoporus sanguineus. A serragem foi utilizada em duas granulometrias, inferior a 500 micra (G1) e entre 500 a 841 micra (G2). Quatro isolados de P. sanguineus foram repicados em placas contendo o meio de cultivo caldo de batata e ágar adicionados com zero, 1%, 5%, 10% e 15% de serragem para cada granulometria. O maior diâmetro final da colônia e velocidade de crescimento micelial foi observado no substrato com granulometria G1, sendo o isolado Ps14 com as maiores médias. A concentração de serragem, para essas variáveis, não influenciou na granulometria G1 e proporcionou maiores valores na granulometria G2. Massa fresca do micélio e produção de cinabarina apresentaram os maiores valores em G2, sendo dos isolados Ps13 e Ps08 as maiores médias, já em G1, Ps14 apresentou o melhor desempenho nas variáveis analisadas. A serragem de Eucalyptus sp., nas concentrações de 10% e 15% é uma alternativa para cultivo in vitro de P. sanguineus, e a granulometria influencia na velocidade de crescimento, produção de massa fresca e teor de cinabarina.

ABSTRACT Basidiomycete fungi that decompose wood produce substances with promising biological activity for the alternative control of plant diseases. The production of these substances can change according to the climatic conditions and the substrate used for fungal cultivation. The objective of this study was to develop a substrate with sawdust from Eucalyptus sp. and to verify its influence on biomass and cinnabarin production by Pycnoporus sanguineus. Sawdust was used in two particle sizes: less than 500 microns (G1) and between 500–841 microns (G2). Four isolates of P. sanguineus were plated on Petri dishes containing potato broth and agar media added with 0%, 1%, 5%, 10%, and 15% sawdust for each particle size. The largest final diameter of the colony and speed of mycelial growth were observed in the substrate with G1 particle size, with the Ps14 isolate showing the highest averages. For these variables, the sawdust concentration did not influence G1 granulometry and provided the highest values in G2 granulometry. Fresh mycelium mass and cinnabarin production showed the highest values in G2, with the isolated Ps13 and Ps08 showing the highest averages, whereas in G1, Ps14 had the best performance for the analyzed variables. These results indicate that sawdust from Eucalyptus sp., at concentrations of 10% and 15%, is an alternative for the in vitro cultivation of P. sanguineus, and that particle size influences the growth speed, fresh mass production, and cinnabarin content.

RESUMO O oídio é uma doença importante do tomateiro, o que demanda tecnologias para seu controle. A homeopatia é uma ciência que vem ganhando espaço como uma alternativa fitossanitária na agropecuária. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o medicamento homeopático Ferrum sulphuricum nas dinamizações 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 e 96CH para controle de oídio. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, em delineamento de parcelas sub-sub-divididas e os resultados comparados com controles etanol 30% e água destilada. O experimento foi conduzido no período de Maio a Junho de 2013. Foram avaliados área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD), índice relativo de clorofila (SPAD), influência no crescimento das plantas pelo volume e massa do sistema radicular, massas de frutos e parte aérea e ainda a esporulação do patógeno nas folhas. Para AACPD, todas as dinamizações reduziram a doença. O genótipo Santa Clara apresentou até 41% menos e Cedro 31% menos doença comparados com o controle etanol, no terço superior da planta. Para o índice SPAD, houve incremento de até 322% no terço médio da planta tratada com a dinamização 24CH. Para as variáveis de crescimento, todas as dinamizações incrementaram em até 197% o volume de raiz e a massa do sistema radicular para ambos genótipos. As dinamizações 6, 12, 24, 72 e 96CH reduziram o número de esporos em folhas de tomateiro Santa Clara em até 40%. Os dados indicam que o medicamento Ferrum sulphuricum pode controlar o oídio em tomateiro, incrementar o crescimento das plantas e que existe diferença de acordo com o genótipo trabalhado.

ABSTRACT Powdery mildew is an important disease in tomato, which requires technologies for its control. Homeopathy is a science that has been improved as an alternative method in agriculture. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the homeopathic medicine Ferrum sulphuricum in 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96CH dynamizations on powdery mildew control. The experiment was conducted from May to June 2013 in a greenhouse, in split-split- plot design, and the results were compared with the controls 30% ethanol and distilled water. We evaluated the area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), relative chlorophyll index (SPAD), influence on plant growth by volume and mass of roots, and mass of fruits and shoots and even the pathogen sporulation on leaves. For the AUDPC, all the dynamizations reduced the disease. The Santa Clara genotype showed up to 41% less and Cedro 31% less disease compared with the control ethanol, in the upper third of the plant. For the SPAD index, there was an increase of up to 322% in the middle third of the plant treated with 24CH dynamization. For the growth variables, all the dynamizations increased up to 197% the volume and weight of roots for Cedro and Santa Clara. The 6, 12, 24, 72 and 96CH dynamizations reduced the pathogen sporulation on Santa Clara tomato leaves by up to 40%. The data indicate that the medicine Ferrum sulphuricum can control powdery mildew on tomato, increase the growth of plants and that there is a differential response according to the host genotype.

RESUMO Nematoides formadores de galha, como Meloidogyne incognita, representam grande problema na tomaticultura, demandando o uso de diversas medidas para o seu manejo. Buscando alternativa eficaz, o objetivo desse trabalho foi testar o extrato de alecrim (Rosmarinus officinalis) em formulação com hidrogel para controle de M. incognita em tomateiro. O formulado foi utilizado nas doses 0,25; 0,50; 0,75; 1,00 e 1,25 g por cova no momento do transplantio das mudas e, como testemunhas, 1,25 g de hidrogel (sem alecrim) e testemunha absoluta (apenas água). As variáveis nematológicas analisadas foram número de massa de ovos, de galhas, de nematoides por raiz e fator de reprodução. Para verificar se houve indução de resistência, amostras de raízes foram recolhidas em diferentes tempos e medidas as atividades das enzimas fenilalanina amônia-liase (FAL), peroxidase (POX) e polifenoloxidase (PFO). Nas variáveis nematológicas, houve redução proporcional ao aumento da dose do formulado, indicando controle efetivo do nematoide. Para as enzimas, a FAL não mostrou alteração significativa em nenhum tratamento ou tempo testado, enquanto que POX e PFO tiveram picos de atividade em diferentes tratamentos em diferentes momentos, principalmente para a dose 1,25 g do formulado. Isto evidenciou que o controle obtido de M. incognita pode ser resultado tanto pelo efeito direto do formulado de alecrim sobre a população do nematoide como pela indução de resistência da planta em reposta à ação do patógeno.

ABSTRACT Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) are responsible for causing great damage to tomato crop, demanding various specific management strategies. In order to find an effective alternative to control this pathogen, the aim of this study was to test the rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) extract in formulation with hydrogel. The formulation was used at doses of 0.25; 0.50; 0.75; 1.00 and 1.25 g per pit, at seedling transplanting, and as controls, 1.25 g of hydrogel (without rosemary) and absolute control (only water). The nematological variables evaluated were number of egg masses, number of galls, total nematodes per root, and reproduction factor. To verify whether plant resistance induction occurred, root samples were collected at different time periods and the activity of the enzymes phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (FAL), peroxidase (POX) and polyphenoloxidase (PFO) were measured. For the nematological variables, we verified proportional dose-dependent reduction of nematode infection, indicating its effectiveness in disease control. For the enzymes, FAL showed no significant change in any treatment or time period tested, whereas POX and PFO showed peaks of activity in different treatments and times, mainly at the dose 1.25 g of the formulation. These results indicated that the control of M. incognita in tomato crop can be achieved by a direct effect of the rosemary extract on the nematode population as well as by plant resistance in response to the pathogen action.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this work was to verify the potential of chelate-based products containing calcium, copper, manganese, and zinc for the management of Pantoea ananatis, Puccinia polysora, Cercospora zeae-maydis, Exserohilum turcicum, Diplodia macrospora, and Pseudomonas avenae in crop maize growth in the summer season, as well as their influence on agronomic characteristics. The treatments included commercial chelate-based products of amino acids with the elements calcium (15%), copper (5%), manganese (15%), and zinc (10%) at doses of 0.5 kg ha-1, 0.3 L ha-1, 0.4 kg ha-1, and 1 L ha-1, respectively; fungicides (20% azoxystrobin and 8% cyproconazole at a dose of 0.3 L ha-1 + 25% propiconazole at a dose of 0.4 L ha-1); and water. The tests were carried out under field conditions for two consecutive years with two simple hybrids. The plant height, stem diameter, number of rows per ear, number of grains per ear row, productivity and mass of one thousand grains, as well as the severity of leaf diseases, were all evaluated, and chemical analysis of the leaves was performed. In the 2016/2017 growth season, for the number of rows per ear and number of grains per row, the fungicide treatment showed the highest values, whereas for the mass of one thousand grains and productivity, the chelate treatments did not differ from the fungicide treatment and were different from the water treatment. In the 2017/2018 growth season, for the mass of one thousand grains and yield, only the fungicide treatment was different from the water treatment. For all the chelates studied for both hybrids, there was no difference in nutrient content before and after foliar application. It can be concluded that calcium, copper, manganese, and zinc products may influence agronomic traits but not the severity of the diseases evaluated in these two hybrids of maize under the edaphoclimatic conditions in which the study was carried out.

ABSTRACT Nematode control strategies are limited and alternative control is demanded. The main aim was to evaluate control potential of Hohenbuehelia spp. (Hohenbuehelia mastrucata, Hohenbuehelia barbatula, Hohenbuehelia bullulifera, Hohenbuehelia portegna, Hohenbuehelia petaloides and Hohenbuehelia paraguayensis) and Trichoderma koningiopsis against Meloidogyne javanica in bean plants in greenhouse. The parameters evaluated were the number of galls and egg masses which were evaluated in three root regions: basal, intermediate and tip; nematode reproduction factor; vegetal growth parameters (plants height on V1, V2, V4, and R5 growth stages, root length, dry weight of root and aerial part dry weight); Treatments were composed by individual interactions of each fungal isolate with 4,000 eggs of M. javanica, having a total control (bean) and a partial control (bean + nematode) arranged in completely randomized design with four repetitions. Data were tested by Scott–Knott (5%). For vegetal growth parameters, there was only significance for dry weight of roots. All species were able to control nematodes.

RESUMO Xanthomonas vasicola pv. vasculorum é uma das principais bacterioses na cultura do milho, a qual causa danos às lavouras, devido à sua rápida disseminação e difícil controle. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de produtos químicos no seu controle e na produtividade de grãos de milho. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 x 7, com três repetições. O primeiro fator foi constituído pelos híbridos de milho P30F53VYHR (mais resistente à doença) e P4285VYHR (mais suscetível) e o segundo por seis ingredientes ativos (casugamicina, enxofre, óxido cuproso, oxicloreto de cobre, amônia quaternária e fosfito de potássio) e uma testemunha (sem aplicação). Os dados obtidos foram utilizados para estimar a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença. Os produtos à base de amônia quaternária, óxido cuproso, oxicloreto de cobre e casugamicina proporcionaram maior controle da doença. P30F53VYHR apresentou produtividade de grãos superior à de P4285VYHR. Portanto, o uso de híbrido geneticamente resistente representa uma alternativa eficiente ao manejo dessa bacteriose.

ABSTRACT Xanthomonas vasicola pv. vasculorum is one of the main bacterial diseases in corn, which causes damage to crops due to its fast dissemination and difficult control. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chemical products on its control and corn grain yield. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 2 x 7 factorial arrangement, with three replications. The first factor consisted of the corn hybrids P30F53VYHR (more resistant to the disease) and P4285VYHR (more susceptible) and the second one of six active ingredients (kasugamycin, sulfur, cuprous oxide, copper oxychloride, quaternary ammonia and potassium phosphite) and one control (no application). The obtained data were used to estimate the area under the disease progress curve. The products based on quaternary ammonia, cuprous oxide, copper oxychloride and kasugamycin provided a greater disease control. P30F53VYHR presented a higher grain yield than that for P4285VYHR. Therefore, the use of a genetically resistant hybrid is an efficient alternative for the management of this bacteriosis.

Resumo Diante da demanda do setor florestal em fornecer mudas de Eucalyptus sp. e devido à dificuldade de enraizamento a partir de estacas, o presente trabalho objetivou avaliar se doses de um fertilizante mineral à base de sulfato de cálcio incrementa a atividade de peroxidase e o desenvolvimento radicular de dois clones de eucalipto. O estudo foi conduzido utilizando os clones de eucalipto IPB22 e IBP26 (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla), nos quais foram realizadas aplicações quinzenais do fertilizante, por 120 dias na parte aérea das plantas, nas dosagens de 0, 40, 80, 160 e 320 g L-1 em casa de vegetação. As variáveis analisadas foram altura da parte aérea, diâmetro do colo, porcentagem de enraizamento e atividade da enzima peroxidase. A aplicação do fertilizante à base de sulfato de cálcio, principalmente em 160 e 320 g L-1, resultou em maior altura, diâmetro de colo, enraizamento das miniestacas e atividade de peroxidase para os dois clones estudados. Dessa forma, conclui-se que esse fertilizante induz a atividade de peroxidase, contribuindo para melhor desenvolvimento de miniestacas de clones de eucalipto.

Abstract Due to the demand of the forest-based sector and the difficulty for providing seedlings of Eucalyptus spp. produced by cutting rooting, the objective of this study was to evaluate if doses of a calcium sulphate-based fertilizer increase the peroxidase activity and the rooting of two eucalyptus clones. The study was conducted using cuttings of the eucalyptus clones IPB22 and IBP26 (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla), in which bi-weekly applications of the fertilizer were carried out in the aerial part of the plants for 120 days at dosages of 0, 40, 80, 160 and 320 g L-1 in indoor experimental nursery. The analyzed variables were shoot height and diameter, rooting percentage and peroxidase activity. We observed that the use of doses of calcium sulphate based fertilizer, mainly 160 and 320 g L-1, increased the height, diameter, rooting and peroxidase of the mini-cuttings for both clones. Thus, this fertilizer induces the peroxidase activity, contributing to a better development of eucalyptus mini-cuttings.

RESUMO Devido ao impacto ambiental gerado pelo uso indiscriminado de fungicidas, busca-se novas alternativas para o controle das doenças, como a utilização de nutrientes, os quais podem inibir o desenvolvimento de patógenos ou diminuir a suscetibilidade da planta a doenças. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se produtos à base de cálcio, cobre, manganês e zinco inibem a germinação de esporos de Puccinia sorghi, Cercospora sp. e Exserohilum turcicum. Foram realizados dois experimentos: o primeiro com meio de cultura ágar-água, onde os tratamentos e os esporos foram colocados no mesmo momento; e o segundo utilizando folhas de milho como substrato, onde os tratamentos foram administrados zero, uma, duas, três, quatro e cinco horas após os esporos serem pulverizados. Utilizou-se como tratamentos produtos à base de cálcio, cobre, manganês e zinco na forma de quelato 15%, 5%, 15% and 10%, fungicida (estrobilurina e triazol, 20% azoxistrobin and 8% ciproconazole + triazol, 25% propiconazole) e água destilada. Realizou-se a contagem dos esporos 24 horas após a aplicação dos tratamentos. Para o primeiro ensaio, os quelatos apresentaram, em média, redução de 39%, tanto na germinação de esporos de P. sorghi quanto de Cercospora sp.. Para o segundo experimento, os mesmos patógenos tiveram redução média de 52%, 59%, 77%, 87%, 81% e 64% para P. sorghi e 40%, 33%, 17%, 18%, 4% e 2% para Cercospora sp., ambos nos tempos, zero, 1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 horas após o tratamento, respectivamente. Para E. turcicum não houve efeito inibitório em nenhum ensaio. Conclui-se que os metais na forma de quelato testados apresentam atividade antifúngica a P. sorghi e Cercospora sp..

ABSTRACT Due to the environmental impact generated using fungicides, new alternatives for disease control have been arising, such as the use of nutrients that may act on the development of certain pathogens or decrease the host susceptibility to diseases. The objective of this work was to verify if chelates of calcium, copper, manganese and zinc inhibit the germination of Puccinia sorghi, Cercospora sp. and Exserohilum turcicum spores. Two experiments were carried out: the first with agar-water culture medium, where the treatments and spores were placed at the same moment and the second using corn leaves as substrate, where treatments were administered zero, one, two, three, four and five hours after the spores are sprayed. Calcium, copper, manganese and zinc products were used as treatments in the form of chelate 15%, 5%, 15% and 10%, fungicide (strobilurine and triazole, 20% azoxistrobin and 8% ciproconazole + triazole, 25% propiconazole) and distilled water. The spores were counted 24 hours after the application of the treatments. In the first experiment, chelates showed an average reduction of 39% in both germination of P. sorghi and Cercospora sp. spores. For the second assay, the same pathogens had a mean reduction of 52%, 59%, 77%, 87%, 81% and 64% for P. sorghi and 40%, 33%, 17%, 18%, 4% and 2% for Cercospora sp., both at zero, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours after treatment, respectively. E. turcicum had no inhibitory effect under treatments. The metal-chelates tested were fungitoxic to P. sorghi and Cercospora sp. spores.

RESUMO O milho é um cereal cuja produtividade pode ser reduzida por diversas doenças foliares, o que tem preconizado tratamentos para controle. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar se produtos à base de cobre, zinco, cálcio e manganês são eficientes para manejo de Pantoea ananatis, Puccinia polysora e Cercospora zeae maydis em milho de segunda safra, e se interferem nos caracteres agronômicos. Foram testados produtos comerciais quelatos de aminoácidos com os elementos cálcio 15%, cobre 5%, manganês 15% e zinco 10%, na dose de 0,5 kg ha-1, 0,3 L ha-1, 0,4 kg ha-1 e 1 L ha-1, respectivamente, um tratamento com fungicida (azoxistrobina 20% e ciproconazol 8% na dose de 0,3 L ha-1 + propiconazol 25% na dose de 0,4 L ha-1), e um tratamento com água. Os ensaios foram realizados em campo por dois anos consecutivos e em dois híbridos simples, em solo cuja fertilidade foi corrigida baseada na análise química do mesmo. Foram avaliados os caracteres agronômicos altura de plantas, diâmetro de colmo, número de fileiras por espiga, número de grãos por fileira da espiga, produtividade e massa de mil grãos. A severidade das doenças foi avaliada com escala diagramática ou através de estimativas de severidade, dependendo do patossistema, e os dados foram utilizados para calcular a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença. Em nenhum dos anos estudados foi registrado efeito significativo dos quelatos para os caracteres agronômicos e para a severidade das doenças que ocorreram nas condições em que o estudo foi conduzido. Novos trabalhos em solos e ambientes diferentes e utilizando híbridos distintos poderão apresentar resultados satisfatórios, assim como em área onde se verifica deficiência destes nutrientes. Conclui-se através deste estudo que produtos à base de cálcio cobre, manganês e zinco não tem influência sobre caracteres agronômicos e severidade das doenças avaliadas em milho de segunda safra para as condições edafoclimáticas de condução dos trabalhos.

ABSTRACT Corn is a cereal whose productivity can be reduced by various diseases which has recommended treatments for control. The objective of this study was to analyze copper, zinc, calcium and manganese products for the management of Pantoea ananatis, Puccinia polysora and Cercospora zeae maydis in second season corn, and interference in agronomic characteristics. Commercial products made of amino acid chelated with 15% calcium, 5% copper, 15% manganese and 10% zinc, at the doses of 0.5 kg ha-1, 0.3 L ha-1, 0.4 kg ha-1 and 1 L ha-1, respectively, a treatment with fungicide (20% azoxystrobin and 8% cyproconazole at 0.3 L ha-1 + 25% propiconazole at 0.4 L ha-1), and a treatment with water were assayed. The experiments were carried out under field conditions for two consecutive years and in two simple hybrids, in soil supplemented with nutrients based on the chemical analysis. The plant height, stem diameter, number of rows per spike, number of grains per row of spike, productivity and mass of one thousand grains were evaluated. Disease severity was assessed with diagrammatic scales and calculated the area under the disease progress curves. In both years, there was no significant effect of chelates for agronomic traits and diseases severity. It is concluded that chelate-based calcium, copper, manganese and zinc products have no influence on agronomic characteristics and severity of the diseases evaluated in second season corn for those edaphoclimatic conditions.

RESUMO Com o intuito de desenvolver novas medidas de proteção de plantas contra doenças, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o controle da pinta preta (Alternaria solani) e da mancha bacteriana (Xanthomonas vesicatoria) no tomateiro, e a atividade antimicrobiana contra seus agentes causais utilizando pó solúvel de alecrim (Rosmarinus officinalis). Para o teste de estabilidade, o pó solúvel foi armazenado a 40 oC por 0, 60, 120 e 180 dias e testado em cinco concentrações (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 mg L-1). Definidos o tempo de prateleira e a melhor concentração, avaliaram-se os intervalos de aplicação de sete, 14 e 21 dias. Como tratamentos controle foram utilizados os fungicidas Azoxystrobina (200 mg do ingrediente ativo – i.a. mL-1) para pinta preta e Oxicloreto de cobre (400 mg i.a. mL-1) para mancha bacteriana. Não houve atividade antimicrobiana in vitro do extrato contra A. solani e X. vesicatoria. A concentração calculada de extrato de alecrim que resultou em menor severidade das doenças foi de 130 mg L-1, com tempo de prateleira do pó solúvel de 24 meses. O extrato proporcionou o mesmo nível de controle da pinta preta e da mancha bacteriana que os fungicidas utilizados, com eficiência de até 75%, em intervalo de aplicação de sete dias. Estes resultados demonstram a eficiência do pó solúvel de alecrim para controle da pinta preta e da mancha bacteriana do tomateiro.

ABSTRACT Aiming to develop new measures of plant protection against diseases, the objective of this study was to verify the control of early blight (Alternaria solani) and bacterial spot (Xanthomonas vesicatoria) in tomato plants, as well as the antimicrobial activity against their causal agents, using soluble powder of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). For the stability test, the soluble powder was kept at 40 oC during 0, 60, 120 and 180 days and assayed at five concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg L-1). When the shelf life and the best concentration were defined, the application intervals of seven, 14 and 21 days were evaluated. As control treatments, the following fungicides were used: Azoxystrobin (200 mg active ingredient – a.i mL-1) for early blight and Copper Oxychloride (400 mg a.i. mL-1) for bacterial spot. There was no in vitro antimicrobial activity of the extract against A. solani and X. vesicatoria. The calculated concentration of rosemary extract that resulted in the least severity of diseases was 130 mg L-1, with 24 months of shelf life of the soluble powder. The extract provided the same control level for early blight and bacterial spot as that of the used fungicides, showing efficiency of up to 75% at a seven-day application interval. These results show the efficiency of rosemary soluble powder in controlling early blight and bacterial spot in tomato plants.

RESUMO O crambe pode ser uma alternativa viável no controle de fitonematoides. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar qual o melhor método de aplicação do extrato de Crambe abyssinica no controle de Meloidogyne incognita. O primeiro experimento foi conduzido em esquema fatorial (3x4+1) em casa de vegetação, com três vias de aplicação do extrato (foliar; solo; foliar+solo), em quatro épocas de aplicação (antes da inoculação; na inoculação; após a inoculação; e semanalmente até 45 dias após a inoculação), e com um tratamento adicional (testemunha). No segundo experimento, o esquema fatorial foi (3x2+1), com três vias de aplicação como citado anteriormente, e duas épocas (após a inoculação e semanalmente). A via foliar após a inoculação e a via solo semanalmente reduziram 23,50% e 30,77% a massa de ovos em comparação à testemunha, respectivamente. A redução do número de galhas com aplicações semanais tanto via solo como via solo+folha foi de 49,27% em comparação à testemunha. No segundo experimento, menos massa de ovos e galhas totais foram verificadas em aplicações via solo semanalmente. A redução de juvenis de segundo estádio (J2) e ovos por grama de raiz foi observada após a inoculação pela via solo+folha, e semanalmente via solo e via solo+folha, com valores 55,24%, 61,57% e 60% inferior à testemunha, respectivamente. O extrato de crambe aplicado via solo semanalmente foi promissor para o manejo de M. incognita na cultura do tomateiro.

ABSTRACT Crambe may be a viable alternative in the control of plant nematodes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the best method for applying Crambe abyssinica extract to control Meloidogyne incognita. The first experiment was conducted in a (3x4+1) factorial design in a greenhouse, using three modes of extract application (leaf; soil; leaf + soil), in four times of application (before inoculation; during inoculation; after inoculation; and weekly until 45 days after inoculation), with an additional treatment (control). In the second experiment, factorial design was (3x2+1), with three application modes, as mentioned above, and two times of application (after inoculation and weekly). Application on the leaf after inoculation and weekly application on the soil reduced egg mass by 23.50% and 30.77%, respectively, compared to control. The reduction in the number of root-knots with weekly applications both on the soil and on the soil + leaf was 49.27%, compared to control. In the second experiment, less egg mass and total root-knots were verified with weekly applications. Second-stage juveniles (J2) and eggs per gram of root reduced after inoculation via soil + leaf and weekly inoculation via soil and via soil + leaf, showing values 55.24%, 61.57% and 60% lower than those of control, respectively. Crambe extract weekly applied on the soil showed promising for the management of M. incognita in tomato plants.

RESUMO Extratos vegetais podem induzir mecanismos de resistência de plantas em função da presença de compostos com características eliciadoras. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do extrato bruto de alecrim nas concentrações 0%; 1%; 2,5% e 5% sobre a atividade de peroxidase, polifenoloxidase e fenilalanina amônia-liase (FAL) em soja inoculada com Macrophomina phaseolina. Foram retiradas amostras nos tempos 0, 36, 72, 120, 168, 216 e 264 h após o tratamento. Nas amostras retiradas do colo das plantas, para peroxidase, as concentrações mais elevadas do extrato proporcionaram dois picos de indução. Houve constante incremento na atividade de polifenoloxidase desde 36 até 120 h após o tratamento para a concentração 5%. Para FAL apenas a concentração 5% promoveu incremento 83% e 130% maior nos tempos 168 e 216 h após o tratamento, respectivamente. Para as atividades na raiz, peroxidase novamente apresentou dois picos de incremento para concentração 5%, a polifenoloxidase foi 426% maior na concentração 5% às 216 h após o tratamento e a atividade de FAL apresentou incremento de 340% no tempo 216 h após o tratamento com 5% do extrato. Estes resultados indicam o potencial do extrato de alecrim em induzir a atividade de enzimas de defesa em colo e raiz de soja.

ABSTRACT Plant extracts may induce resistance mechanisms in plants due to the presence of compounds with eliciting characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of rosemary crude extract at the concentrations 0%; 1%; 2.5% and 5% on the activity of peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) in soybean plants inoculated with Macrophomina phaseolina. Samples were collected at 0, 36, 72, 120, 168, 216 and 264 hours after treatment. Considering the samples collected at the collar region of plants, for peroxidase, the highest concentrations of the extract provided two induction peaks. There was a constant increase in polyphenol oxidase activity from 36 to 120 hours after treatment at 5% concentration. For PAL, only the concentration of 5% led to increases 83% to 130% higher at 168 and 216 hours after treatment, respectively. For the activities in the root, peroxidase again showed two increment peaks at 5% concentration; polyphenol oxidase was 426% higher at 5% concentration at 216 hours after treatment and PAL activity showed an increase of 340% at 216 hours after treatment with 5% extract. These results indicate the potential of rosemary extract to induce the activity of defense enzymes in the collar region and in the root of soybean plants.

RESUMO Compostos secundários de plantas medicinais podem ativar mecanismos de defesa em plantas contra patógenos. O extrato aquoso (EA) de Corymbia citriodora têm manifestado essa atividade, mas são escassas informações dos mecanismos de ação envolvidos. Assim, esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito do EA na indução de enzimas de defesa e na proteção de pepino à Colletotrichum lagenarium. Para tanto, o EA, autoclavado ou não, foi avaliado quanto a capacidade de proteção e indução de peroxidases, polifenoloxidases, quitinases e b-1,3 glucanases e fenilalanina amônialiase. Água destilada e acibenzolar-S-metil (50 mg i.a. L-1) foram utilizados como testemunhas. Também foi avaliado o efeito do EA nas concentrações de 1, 5, 10, 15 e 20%, bem como o efeito local e sistêmico, e de uma ou duas aplicações. A inoculação do patógeno ou a coleta de amostras para determinação da atividade enzimática foi realizada 72 horas após os tratamentos. O EA reduziu a severidade de C. lagenarium e induziu peroxidases e β-1,3-glucanases em 37,6, 67,2 e 122,7%, respectivamente. Houve redução na severidade da doença e aumento de peroxidases a partir da concentração de 5% do EA. Este apresentou somente efeito local, com maior redução na severidade quando em duas aplicações. Estes resultados sugerem o efeito indutor de resistência do EA em pepino com indução de peroxidases e β-1,3-glucanases.

ABSTRACT Secondary compounds of medicinal plants can activate defense mechanisms in plants against pathogens. The aqueous extract (AE) of Corymbia citriodora has shown that activity, but there is scarce information about the involved mechanisms of action. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of AE on the induction of defense enzymes and protection of cucumber from Colletotrichum lagenarium. Thus, the AE, autoclaved or not, was evaluated for its capability of protecting and inducing peroxidases, polyphenoloxidases, chitinases and β-1.3-glucanases, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase. Distilled water and acibenzolar-S-methyl (50 mg a.i. L-1) were used as controls. The effect of AE at the concentrations of 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20% was also evaluated, as well as its local and systemic effect, and the effect of one or two applications. Pathogen inoculation or sample collection for determination of enzyme activity was performed at 72 hours after treatments. The AE reduced the severity of C. lagenarium and induced peroxidases and β-1.3-glucanases by 37.6, 67.2 and 122.7%, respectively. There was a reduction in the disease severity and an increase in peroxidases from the concentration of 5% AE. The latter showed only local effect and greater reduction in severity when two applications were performed. These results suggest the effect of AE in inducing resistance in cucumber and inducing peroxidases and β-1.3-glucanases.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou analisar o controle biológico do Colletotrichum musae em bananas por meio de Saccharomyces cerevisiae e Saccharomyces boulardii. Células de S. cerevisiae foram obtidas a partir do fermento de panificação Fleischmann®. Células de S. boulardii foram obtidas a partir do medicamento Floratil®. Utilizou-se um cacho de banana colhido de área orgânica, os frutos passaram por um processo de assepsia, em seguida foram tratados com células de S. cerevisiae, S. boulardii e ambas as leveduras na concentração de 2 g L-1, após 24 horas inoculou-se o C. musae em três pontos por fruto. Para avaliar-se o efeito da concentração de células no tratamento o processo foi repetido, tratando-se os frutos com concentrações de 0; 0,5; 1; 2; 4 e 8 g L-1 de S. cerevisiae e S. boulardii, avaliou-se a área lesionada, a cada 48 horas, por 14 dias. Também avaliou-se o halo de inibição e a produção de compostos voláteis, ambos in vitro, para analisar se há ocorrência de antagonismo. Observou-se que o tratamento com as leveduras reduz o progresso da doença, e que S. cerevisiae e S. boulardii apresentam maior eficiência na concentração de 5,5 e 6,3 g L-1, respectivamente, apresentando redução de 48% e 35% do progresso da doença, respectivamente. Observou-se a formação de halo de inibição e produção de compostos voláteis, indicando que estas leveduras atuam por meio de antagonismo. Deste modo, estas leveduras são potencias agentes de controle biológico do C. musae.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyze the biological control of Colletotrichum musae in bananas by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces boulardii. Cells of S. cerevisiae were obtained from Fleischmann® bread yeast. Cells of S. boulardii were obtained from the drug Floratil®. A bunch of bananas collected from an organic area was used. Fruits underwent a process of asepsis and were then treated with cells of S. cerevisiae. S. boulardii and both yeasts at the concentration of 2 g L-1; after 24 hours, C. musae was inoculated in three points per fruit. To evaluate the effect of cell concentration on the treatment, the process was repeated, treating the fruits with concentrations of 0; 0.5; 1; 2; 4 and 8 g L-1 of S. cerevisiae and S. boulardii; the injured area was evaluated at every 48 hours during 14 days. The inhibition halo and the production of volatile compounds were also evaluated, in vitro, to analyze whether there is antagonism. Treatment with these yeasts reduces the disease progress and S. cerevisiae and S. boulardii exhibit greater efficiency at the concentration of 5.5 and 6.3 g L-1, respectively, leading to a reduction of 48% and 35% in the disease progress, respectively. We observed formation of inhibition halo and production of volatile compounds, indicating that these yeasts act by means of antagonism. Thus, these yeasts are potential agents for the biological control of C. musae.
